Why knotweed finds its way along the Weaver, the Dane and the canals around Northwich, and which parts of a garden to check.
Knotweed spreads from bits of root and stem. Water edges, towpaths and ground disturbed by flooding or earlier works make it easy for those pieces to travel. Northwich has rivers, navigations and canals running through it, along with hollows left where the ground has sunk.
If your garden reaches down to a river, canal, flash or railway bank, walk the bottom boundary in spring for red-purple spears and again in summer for tall hollow canes.
The owner of the land where it is growing. A survey of your own side records whether it has moved across the boundary.
